OUACHITA TRAIL - 40 MILES IN 4 DAYS - COACHLIGHT ROAD TO HWY 27

On this slack packing trip, we stayed at Ouachita River Haven in Pencil Bluff, Arkansas.  We were in the cozy Enchanted Cabin.  When we arrived at Quachita River Haven after our first day of hiking, we were greeted by the owner's dog, Shop.  He welcomed us by walking in and showing us the cabin which was decorated with a Christmas tree and there was Christmas music programmed on the television.  I snapped a photo of Shop in front of the beautiful Christmas tree.  We later learned that Shop had a deer (fawn) friend that had separated from its mother and he is very protective of the young deer.  We didn't get to the see the deer, but saw photos.  Sweetest story.
Shop and the Christmas tree
Always fun with these girls.  We listened to Indian Flute music for a while and just enjoyed the feeling of being back in the forest.

Many people visit Ouachita Trail not only to hike but to look for crystals.  This is a cool one we spotted.
I looked up the official name of this algae (who cares - I can't pronounce it anyway).  I just call it turkey tails.
This photo is when I was hiking behind Stacey and looked up and she was not in front of me.  I then realize the switchbacks had started and my peripheral vision kicked in just in time for me to snap this photo.
Infamous "Jaws"

I needed a Red Cape and I would have looked like Red Riding Hood.
We stayed dry and warm.  We battled lots of drizzles on this weekend.

It is always cool to spot a rock with a significant shape.  We have spotted several heart and Oklahoma shaped rocks on the OT. (Photo 2)
Stacey spotted the oddly shaped tree. (Photo 1)  We spotted lots of Wholly Oak Galls. (Photo 2)
We encountered a few water crossings, but we didn't get wet feet.

We made a stop at the Ouachita Artists in Mt. Ida.
The Ouachita Artists were having an art show and it was a bonus to get to see my friend, Patti.
